The Proof Against Bigotry
Observing prejudice runs south down every continent: Canadians look down on Americans who look down on Southerners who look down on Mexicans who look down on Guatemalans who look down on Nicaraguans. In Sweden I met people who looked down on Germans who looked down on Italians who looked down on Southern Italians who look down on Africans.
Yes I have noticed prejudice runs south. Despite Eratosthenes having calculated in 1700 B.C. our radius, and doing the math to prove us round, we did not believe until 2000 years later when Magellan sailed around the world, to die in his journey, that the earth was really round. Every year we see the proof of Earth’s shape, every lunar eclipse when the moon slowly moves through earth’s shadow. Every time that shadow is seen, its edge is round.
